Tartary was a country with its own flag, its own government, its own language and its own place on ancient maps, predating the second half of the 19th century. Known as Great Tartary, it was a vast country in north Asia, bound by the Ural Mountains on the west, the Caspian Sea on the southwest and the Pacific Ocean on the east. Its territory was huge, but somehow it was quietly incorporated into Russia, China and other countries. Does the Tartarian age of incredible buildings and monuments sit between the Golden Age and the Contemporary Age? Was there a reset around 1850? What can we deduce from existing photographs of that time?
