There was, apparently, a sudden need in the 18th and 19th centuries to build massive structures which we were told were orphanages. This is a highly dubious explanation, given that these buildings were so large they were like self-contained towns. Anyway, many of these asylums were also orphan homes ... and were sometimes given the name "Odd Fellows Homes." These homes were funded and owned by a Masonic lodge known as the Odd Fellows.
