New York's Pennsylvania Station is a lost marvel – formerly the 4th largest building in the world. The official reason for its destruction (in the 1960s) is that Americans had begun to travel by air and automobile more than train, and so the train companies had to convert their real estate assets to survive economically. However, on a deeper level, this fits in with the theme of destruction of significant historical and beautiful architecture, in a sacrilegious attempt to hide our true history from us. Penn Station used to inspire and ennoble its passengers – now, a dark cramped basement lit with fluorescents, it has the opposite psychological effect. Coincidence?
