The Weimar Republic was esteemed as a great European democracy before it fell under the foot of Nazism; its weakness was an emergency clause that allowed it to be suspended. The US Constitution has no such emergency clause. Never once, throughout 7 smallpox epidemics, did the young US Republic suspend any of the 5 unalienable rights listed in the 1st Amendment. Never before, throughout the Civil War, World Wars 1 and 2, the Spanish flu, the Asian flu, the Hong Kong flu and all the other swine and bird flus, did the US Republic suspend key rights of the Bill of Rights. Why have we done so for a coronavirus common cold?
