People take so many drugs! Prescription drugs are the 3rd highest leading cause of death in the US (only exceeded by cancer and heart disease), and kill around 200,000 Americans every year. We are not so much chronically sick as chronically overdiagnosed and overmedicated. If each drug has 30-40 side effects, and many patients take multiple drugs simultaneously, how could doctors possibly know the exact interactions among the taken drugs? They can't! It's a giant experimental game, giving doctors kickbacks and making a literal killing for Big Pharma.
