Freedom from religion is a fundamental aspect of the USA. The 1st Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..." which means that people can believe anything they want – as long as they don't force their will on others. Catholic President JFK said: "I believe in an America where separation of Church and State is absolute." Insisting on a State religion emphasizes faith over reason, makes non-believers into political outsiders and makes priests into official legal holders of the "Word of God" (a theocracy). Religiosity is not equivalent to morality, as can be seen by the large number of upright, moral, non-religious people in society.
